The Heroes Memorial and Tribute
In March 2004, then City Councilor, Jack Hanna, requested approval from the Gresham City Council to establish a Task Force
to raise the funds to build a Memorial to all men and women in Military, Fire, and Police services. The Council agreed and in
April the Task Force was formed. But there was one condition – there would be no City money involved. And so it began . . .
After five years of fund raising and a year of construction on May 2, 2009, the Heroes Memorial & Tribute was dedicated. She
was built through the generosity of citizens and corporate sponsors and one of the few projects within the City that was
completely paid-in-full on the day of dedication. Located within the parameters of an area known as Small Park, which had been
cared for by the Optimists Club for many years, on the corner of Powell and Roberts adjacent to Main City Park in the heart of
downtown Gresham, Oregon.
Why this location? Because it is highly visible and serves as a daily reminder for all that pass by of her purpose. She's a thank
you to all the men and women who have chosen to protect our safety and way of life. She stands firm with her flags proudly
waving letting all those who are serving and have served how much their daily efforts are appreciated, the families of those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice that those sacrifices were appreciated, and that those who have yet to come home will always
be remembered.
Why is She so special? Because this Memorial & Tribute is a four part dedication -- to the living, to those who have made the
ultimate sacrifice, to the MIAs and POWs, and an appreciation to the families who wait for their return. She is not
specific to any event, or war or service group, or person. And She is not just for Gresham or Oregon but dedicated to all men
and women across this great land.
She is One-of-Kind!
A TRIBUTE dedicated to the LIVING men and women who have and / or are serving in Military, Fire and Police Services.
A MEMORIAL dedicated to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
A REMEMBRANCE to those who are still waiting to come home.
An APPRECIATION to their families who wait with open arms for their safe return.
Come visit the Heroes Memorial & Tribute -- you'll be glad you did.
